FULLERTON, CA – Did you know that Cal State Fullerton has a long legacy of Ice Hockey? Beginning in the 1980’s the Titans played club-level hockey for several seasons at the fondly-remembered ice rink in the Brea Mall, and had a strong presence on campus. Despite a couple of start-up attempts in later years, the momentum couldn’t be sustained and the program went dormant.
The good news is that Titan Hockey is back, and stronger than ever! This past year, a dedicated group of students rebuilt the program from ground up. Through their perseverance, the club has received official recognition from Cal State Fullerton and the American Collegiate Hockey Association.
Despite official sanctioning coming late in the school year, Titan Hockey participated in six exhibition games in 2008-09. The response was dramatic! Crowds of over 300 fans packed the local ice arenas to cheer on the Titans. Team play and confidence improved swiftly with each game, and the mini-season culminated with a 9-3 victory over a very experienced UCLA squad, in front of a screaming, stomping, standing room only crowd at the KHS Ice Arena in Anaheim.
Titan Hockey will be fielding a brand new squad in 2009-10 which will be competing in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II with USC, UCLA, UCI, Long Beach State, San Diego State, Arizona State and others. The club will be hosted by universities in Utah, Arizona and Northern California as they travel to those areas to compete.
The Season Schedule is packed with 30 exciting games and special events, including three special Anaheim Ducks nights at Anaheim Ice Arena, complete with raffle prizes. Titan Hockey will also be participating in special games at the Honda Center in Anaheim, and the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.
The Titan Hockey club is led by former pro-coaches and a strong board of directors who are actively seeking additional sponsors. Cal State Fullerton students are also invited to participate in the Titan Hockey club. There are openings available in hockey operations, booster support, and playing positions. Students interested in the club should contact titanhockey@charter.net as soon as possible.
The first puck drops in Las Vegas on Friday, September 18, 2009. The first Titan Hockey home game is on Friday, September 25 against USC.
