ABBOTSFORD, BC – With five unanswered goals the Hamilton Bulldogs took game five of the series with the Abbotsford Head 5-2. The Bulldogs were ruthlessly efficient in the third period when they netted four of the goals on only six shots. The Bulldogs now head home for games six and seven (if necessary) with a 3-2 series. Hamilton hosts game six at Copps Coliseum on Monday. Abbotsford jumped on the board first when Gaelan Patterson picked up his first professional goal 11:50 of the first. Patterson, a 2009 draft pick by the Calgary Flames who had made his pro debut in Game 4 of the series on Thursday, knocked a rebound of David Van der Gulik’s shot.
Cam Cunning gave the Heat a a 2-0 lead just 62 seconds into the middle frame. It was Cunning’s first playoff goal after scoring 19 in the regular season. Mike Glumac cut the lead in half when he beat David Shantz for his sixth goal of the playoffs at 6:55. Glumac then tied it up when his shot from the right-wing circle deflected off a Heat defender and past Shantz with 9:19 left in regulation. Hamilton got its first lead off a goal from Andre Benoit with 3:23 to play on a shot from the point.
Ryan Russell continued the scoring when he iced the game with 32.8 seconds left with a goal in an empty net.
David Desharnais completed the scoring with a second empty net goal. Sanford made 30 saves for the Bulldogs Shantz finished with 24 saves for the Heat who now face a must-win situation.
