BOSTON, Mass – It’s been a recurring theme through the first two games of the series between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers. The Bruins skate to a lead, Philadelphia rallies to tie the game and then a Bruins player scores to give his club the winning margin.
In Game One it was Marc Savard scoring a goal for the ages when he punched one past Philadelphia netminder Brian Boucher in overtime. In Game Two the Bruins would not need overtime as Milan Lucic scored with under three minutes remaining in regulation to provide the margin of victory.
The contest was a see-saw affair all game long as the Bruins would get out to a pair of single goal leads only to see Philadelphia knot the score.
Boston’s Johnny Boychuk open the scoring when he accepted a face-off win by Patrice Bergeron and snuck the puck past Boucher. Mike Richards would return the favor late in the first period when he circled from behind the net and fired a wrist shot past Boston’s Tuukka Rask.
Miroslav Satan pushed the Bruins back in front after he took a pass from Blake Wheeler and beat Boucher with a wrist shot from the face-off circle to Boucher’s left. Late in the period Philadelphia scored a goal with under a minute to play in the period. Daniel Briere accepted a pass from Ville Leino and snapped a shot past Rask.
The two clubs played a taut final period until Lucic contained a bouncing puck and settled it down. As soon as things were under control, Lucic fired a shot which deflected off Boucher and into the goal.
Notes: Boston’s Marco Sturm was declared out of the playoffs after suffering a severe knee injury early in Game 1….Bergeron won 73% of the face-offs he took during the course of the evening…Each netminder turned away 24 shots…Briere now has nine points in his last four games.
