COVENTRY, UK – Coventry Blaze and Team Great Britain head coach Paul Thompson has moved to upgrade his team with the addition of experienced winger Sean Selmser, a former Columbus Blue Jacket.
Selmser, 35, has spent the previous eight seasons in Austria establishing himself as one of the leading wingers in the league finishing this season just gone with 11 goals, 20 assists for a 31 point return.
A fiesty defensive winger who is not afraid of parting with his mitts, Selmser is consistently around the 100 PIMs mark, sitting for 116 minutes in the season just gone.
Not a stranger to UK hockey, Selmser previously played 8 games for Ayr Scottish Eagles in their ill-fated final season before scoring a wonder goal for the Belfast Giants in their Continental Cup Superfinal campaign.
Although question marks are raised about his age, coming onto 36 this November, the Blaze number 10 is undoubtedly one of the most storied players coming into the new season and with former Washington Capital Owen Fussey on the team alongside Elite League MVP Luke Fulghum and 5 season Blaze forward Dan Carlson widely expected to re-sign it has to be seen to be an upgrade on either Derek Campbell or Danny Stewart both of whom have confirmed they won’t be in Blaze colours next season.
Selmser rivals Belfast Giants’ Jon Gleed as amongst the most exciting signings of the summer and Blaze fans will be on the edge of their seats to see if Selmser still has the legs that took him all the way to the NHL.
Elsewhere, Braehead Clan have brought AHL defenceman Tim Wedderburn to Glasgow from Lake Erie Monsters and Victoria Salmon Kings of the AHL and ECHL respectively. An experienced defenceman with nearly 300 games in the AHL, Wedderburn is likely to be one of the best blueliners in the EIHL this coming year.
The exodus from Edinburgh has continued with native Scott McKenzie opting to return for a top line spot in the EPL with Telford Tigers. A 17 point forward with the Capitals last season, McKenzie wants more ice time and time on the powerplay which leads him to join what looks like a promising Telford Tigers side.
