Blackhawks beat Jets in return to Winnipeg

WPG Jets logoWINNIPEG, Man, Canada – The Jets were looking to make a statement against the defending Stanley Cup Champs and new division foes the Chicago Blackhawks and they did for the first period but after that it was all downhill as they were defeated 5-1 by the Blackhawks.

It was a big debut for Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews as he hadn’t played in his hometown yet and was excited to return to Winnipeg, He was kept off the score sheet but did manage to finish with just under 19 minutes of ice time.

Corey Crawford was stellar in the pipes for Chicago, stopping 26 of 27 shots .

Winnipeg’s Ondrej Pavelec wasn’t so lucky as he was pulled after giving up 4 goals on 14 shots.

Back up Al Montoya made 10 saves and gave up a goal in his relief duty for the Jets.

Things started out great for the Jets as Toby Enstrom opened the scoring with his 2nd of the season.

Things went sour after the Winnipeg goal as the Blackhawks scored five straight.

They got goals from Niklas Hjalmarsson his 1st, Brandon Bollig his 2nd, Patrick Sharp his 3rd, Nick Leddy his 2nd, Ben Smith his 2nd.

The Jets outshot the Hawks 27-25 in the game but they couldn’t find that second goal and couldn’t get that timely save to stay in the game.

Winnipeg played a more physical game as they out hit the Blackhawks 29-10.

Chicago just seemed to move the puck to the right spots and finish off plays for results on the scoreboard.

The Blackhawks play a stingy game as they don’t turn over many pucks and they always get pucks deep.

Zach Bogosian played a strong game for the Jets as he led them in ice time playing just over 25 minutes.

Ben Chariot made his NHL debut for Winnipeg after being recalled from the IceCaps .

Earlier in the day the Jets acquired defenseman Keaton Ellerby off waivers from the LA Kings.

The Jets placed Mark Stuart on the injury reserve list and recalled Julian Melchiori from the IceCaps.

The Jets will need to turn this sinking ship around if they have any hope of staying in the playoff race.

Changes could be on the way as the honeymoon period is over and fans as well as ownership want results now.

The Jets will host the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night before heading to Chicago for a rematch with the Blackhwaks.
