Barons shut out Bulldogs

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The inaugural season Barons won game three of this series of the Western Conference on home ice.   The first two periods were scoreless, yet included physical play from the Bulldogs, “They came after us really hard and seemed to want to hurt us,” said Alex Giroux.

It appeared that penalty trouble would continue for the Barons when winger Colin McDonald twice negated the Barons power-play.   “I was getting frustrated.   I was thankful that I was able to get a good [scoring] chance right after that, fortunately,” said McDonald.

The first goal of the game came at 8:38 in the third period, from the “MGM” line of McDonald, Giroux and Brad Moran.   The shot from Moran was headed toward the net, when McDonald steered it in.   “I didn’t see the puck until the last second, it was probably going in to be honest; but at this point, you can’t take any chances,” said McDonald.   The first goal of the game was the game winning goal, his first post-season game-winner.

With four-minutes remaining in the game, the “insurance” goal came from Giroux, who has been a goal scorer in nine consecutive post-seasons.   While the Hamilton goaltender Drew MacIntyre was sprawled on the ice, the puck rebounded to Giroux, who was on his knees, as he had just collided with another player in the left-wing circle.   “I set the puck up in the air and was thinking of a [line] change.   There was only one guy in back and the puck was bouncing.   I decided to stick with it and it trickled in, then I had to get up,” said Giroux.

Neither team capitalized on the power play, each team having six chances.   The Barons outshot the Bulldogs 46 to 20 shots on goal. Martin Gerber earned a shut-out win, his fifth of the season with the Barons.

Hamilton leads the series 2 games to 1.   The Barons will have the advantage of home ice for Games 4 and 5, as they will be played in the Cox Center of Oklahoma City.   These games are scheduled for Wednesday and Friday evenings.
