BINGHAMTON, NY – Broome County forward Aaron Boyer snapped a 2-2 tie late in the third period for his 9th goal of the season, and Peter Skoggard stopped 40 shots to help lift the Barons over the New York Aviators, 3-2, in Federal Hockey League action.
A’s defenseman Jarrett Rush was sent off with 3:29 left in the final stanza on an interference call, and Boyer deposited home a loose puck in front for the game winning marker. The Barons have now defeated New York in back-to-back contests.
John Goffredo put New York on the board first in the opening period with a power play marker at the 12:42 mark. Aviators’ forward Chris Holmes set up Goffredo with a beautiful pass that he then shot past Barons’ goaltender Petr Skoggard for his 12th tally of the season, and second power play goal of the year. The lead carried into the second period, with Aviators’ net minder Kevin Druce having to only turn aside six shots in the first frame.
The lead would be short lived though, with two goals coming for Broome at the start of the second period. Just :27 seconds in, James Gerhing potted a short handed marker to tie the game up at 1-1, for his team leading 13th goal of the year. Then 1:14 after, newly acquired forward Steve Romanin broke out the penalty box and put a back hander past Druce to give the Barons the lead on his second mark of the year. However, Rob Miller’s club battled back to tie the contest at two, as A’s forward Jesse Felten banged home a rebound in front for his third marker on the campaign at 11:30.
The tie would not last with Boyer’s late tally, and now the Aviators are on a two game losing streak after winning six straight.
Druce is charged with his second straight loss while stopping 22 shots. Skoggard gets his eighth win on the campaign for Broome. The wins pulls the Barons ahead of New York in the standings, as Broome now has a 10-6-3 record, good enough for 23 points. The A’s drop to 10-9-1 and are still stranded with 21 points.
