PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz – The Arizona Sundogs freeze out the St. Charles Chill in 1-0 shutout. This was their first match-up this season against the new expansion team Friday night at The Family Arena. After Friday’s win Arizona pulls ahead of the Chill in the league standings and is tied with Wichita for seven points.
After 40 minutes of play, both teams found their selves scoreless heading into the third period. The Sundogs provided the Chill with an early power play opportunity in the first period which they couldn’t capitalize on, after Justin Pender was accessed two minutes for elbowing. The Sundogs found their selves on a four minute power play following an altercation in the second period, that resulted in a double minor roughing penalty on Jason Morgan and both Anthony Pisano and Tyler Barr were called for roughing and cross checking.
Garrett Clarke scored the only goal in Friday’s contest with assist from Jordan Clendenning while on the man-advantage power play. Clendenning extended his point streak to three games registering six points. Arizona held off St. Charles in the final frame, despite the late power play advantage they gave up after Jeff Buvinow was called for holding.
Andrew Engelage solidified his first shutout win of the season blocking 32 shots, while St. Charles outshot Arizona 32-24. The Sundogs were 1-8 on the power play and the Chill were 0-5. Saturday the teams are back at it when Arizona faces the St. Charles Chill for the second round.
