ALLEN, Texas – Teams and fans across the Central Hockey League have taken notice of Allen Americans forward Colton Yellow Horn’s high level of play, earning him the respect of his peers and placing him firmly in the running for this season’s Most Valuable Player award.
The diminutive winger is both a playmaker and showman with the puck, blending innate talent with deft hands and a touch of magic to make him a most valuable asset to both his club as well as the Central Hockey League. It’s the players like Yellow Horn that people pay their hard earned money to come see display their skills on the ice every night, and he makes that expenditure a very worthy investment. In his first year, Yellow Horn contributed 35 points in 43 regular season games and another 20 points in the Americans’ strong 20 game run deep into the Ray Miron President’s Cup finals last season. This season he’s raised his game up further and has been one of the main driving forces offensively for his team, leading the Americans with 83 points (32 G, 51 A) in 63 games and currently sits 8th in league scoring. Colton is not a one dimensional goal scorer either; while many of his goals are highlight-reel worthy tallies, scoring on his knees or flying through the air, his talents are as evident defensively as they are in the offensive zone. He’s tapped consistently for the teams penalty kill in one and two man down situations as heavily as he is on the power play. Deceptively quick, Yellow Horn also has great vision and hockey sense in all three zones and has found himself a marked man because of that on many a night, but has yet to be deterred. The unassuming Brocket, Alberta native is fearless in the corners, digging out the puck with a rabid focus to create scoring chances for his team and drives hard for the backcheck on every shift. He plays much bigger than his 5’ 6” frame would lead one to believe; his lack of fear most likely conditioned by years involved in off-season rodeo events which he does for fun. When you can handle yourself on the rodeo circuit, all else must appear less intimidating. It is players like Yellow Horn that provide the Central Hockey League and its fans with a quality product on the ice and keep them returning for more. He’s one of the most entertaining and offensively creative players in the league and is very deserving of his nomination for Most Valuable Player and his consistent play night in and night out proves he’s truly worthy of the award itself.
