Montreal–It is early in the draft but it appears that the clubs are agreeing with Central Scouting right down the line as Brayden Schenn, the fifth-ranked player went to the team drafting fifth in the draft.
Schenn has been screaming up the draft boards due to his scoring skills, pugnacious play and the fact his brother Luke, had an excellent rookie season last year with the Toronto Maple Leafs. There will be no draft-bragging rights in the Schenn household as each of them was selected with the fifth overall selection in the draft.
“Brayden is of the power-forward ilk. He has learned a little about the NHL from his older brother Luke Schenn and he knows how to go to the net. He is a threat to score at all times on the ice and dishes the puck very effectively to his linemates in getting the amount of assists that he does,” said NHL Director of Scouting E.J. McGuire. “He takes the puck to the net with the kind of authority that a Jonathan Cheechoo does, yet has puck dishing capacities that maybe a Joe Thornton does. Both are tough players, both are tough to move out in front of the net and Brayden fits that ilk perfectly.”
PHN analysis; this is a great pick for the Kings who needed help up front. There is a stable of young, talented forwards on the team, and Schenn will be given an opportunity to join them immediately. However, if he is not ready the club can give him another season in junior hockey.
